"John Wynne" - Newspeak - British Art Now - Saatchi Gallery - London

go to the opening of art galleries in London and 'quite simple and most of the time there is no' selection entry. There are four reasons why an inauguration and 'a pleasant social event abbanstanza: # 1) 99% of the time you can meet the artists directly and ask for an explanation of their work, unless they have abused the point No. 3) - n .2) the tunnel and 'open late and you can' go after a day's work - No. 3) there are almost always of alcoholic beverages offered by the gallery - # 4) and 'opportunity passs for a pleasant evening with friends and you can' chat loudly in front of the works (or not) of art. One of these evenings I found myself with Frank at the opening of the new Saatchi Collection, "Newspeak: British Art Now." I had not seen Frank for a long time, so we politely took our glass of champagne, moscato say .. and we expect that the displaced people telling us a bit 'latest vicchio real life. Lost in our conversations, we did not realize the time that passed and we only had 45 minutes to see some room before the end of the tunnel. "Ok we start from here" .. "uh .. But what is interesting '?" Installation and then for 300 speakers, a pianola, and a vacuum cleaner! And yes, a long time since I did not see a sound installation in London. About ten years ago were very fashionable but recently this has not been seen much. I sat among the speakers and it 'was great. Obviously both speakers, that the vacuum that the player piano are driven by a computer and are not synchronized so the sound and 'not intended to be repeated. The part that strikes and 'build-up of speakers of all shapes and sizes and also the sound that can emit light without trasmettino no music. A slight Sibyl who repeated 300 times becomes a loud and clear. The sitting in the middle of speakrs I wondered if I had done something wrong, if I had to continue working in the field of music and there's no 'day when I wake up and not the first thing I ask.

"Maestria e eleganza" - Howe Gelb + Giant Sand + Kristin Hersh + A band of Gypsies - Barbican - London - 22/07/2010

do not understand why all these years has never seen the Giant Sand / Howe Gelb or live. I'm trying to relate the dates of the old local tour and make the mind of where I was for not having attended. On the other hand should also be honest and admit that I've always preferred the Giant Sant Calexico are one of my favorite bands ever and I've seen at least a dozen times live. A mea culpa de prufundis for not having brought more 'attention to Giant Sand and parallel projects leaving the hair of that musical genius and 'Howe Gelb.
Last year was the first time I saw Mr. Gelb here in London, the ICA, for the release of "Snow Angel", a music documentary about his collaboration project with a gospel choir Candes. I do not deny that I took the risk of falling asleep despite the sig.Gelb was sitting behind me. Although the documentary was boring with a bad director, he gave me to reflect on the depth 'and his talent and his undeniable and inexhaustible passion for music. Almost a year after Gelb returns with a new project. Direction Corboda in Spain, a fresh collaboration with a group of flamenco "The band of gypsies" (and not Gypsys like Hendrix!). And what better time to present it in London if not the celebration of 25 years of Giant Sand at the Barbican. This evening, I find a great location at the Barbican, the third row, height of the stage, with some free couch next to me. Gelb, has invited many musicians to celebrate 25 years, only Kristin Hersh, ex-Throwing Muses, which opens this evening. Minute with a simple hairdo and a dress and a string of pearls around his neck, with his guitar and his amazing voice has shown to a room not gremitissima to have determination to sell his songs were still a strong impact. After half an hour, Howe Gelb and Giant Sand's go on stage. Tonight dig very little in the past, the pieces are most recent and there is' even some new. Accompanying this set, a photo slideshow focuses mostly 'on Howe Gelb: young, with children with new musicians who accompany him in the adventure of Giant Sand, with the Snow Angel, the band of gypsies in Spain. John Convertino and Joey Burns, appear blurred on a picture of an old German magazine, perhaps the first cover that Giant Sand fecereo in Europe. And the same Convertino and Burns appear to be missing the big tonight for this celebration of a quarter century of Giant Sand. Of course the new musicians are cherished music of Giant Sand and there is 'a great harmony with each other even if the person who runs the ball, and' he, the man plurimusicista and multitalentuoso, the master Gelb, which alternates from acoustic guitar to electric piano to grace with a pixie. He gives us in this first set (second, if we count Kristin Hersh) incredible interpretation of "Expiration day tracks" of his deceased friend Vic Chesnut. End of first half. We stretch our legs out of the room, a drink or a snack at the bar and we're back in the room. Giant Sand on the scene in the background accompanying Kristin Hersh who reads passages from his autobiography: Paradoxical Undressing, texts surreal, ironic and somewhat amusing. Odd choice to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Giant Sand, Madame Hersh leave so much space, but do not try to understand what blend for the head of Howe Gelb. After the readings, Howe Gelb remains alone on stage with Thoger T. Lund controbasso and invites the group of gypsy musicians Corboba to reach them. Oh, the moment you expected. Seated in a semicircle, a perfect set of English flamenco that blends indie rock with the class and elegance that the Master Gelb. Increbibile a set that I wanted to continue for hours but after a few pieces here come the rest of Giant Sand on stage with Kristin Hersh. Applause, standing ovation you deserve. I hope this was just a taster and hopefully soon with a more 'long presentation of his new incredible project, preferably without documentary. Long live Howe Gelb!

Indimenticabile - Patrick Watson and the Wooden Arms - Tabernacle - London 05/07/10

February 2007, Paris. At home, Christelle, I have a nice promo-cd that Jerome has just given me, "Ma Fleur" by Cinematic Orchestra. The CD player marks: Track 4 "Music Box". We do not say anything, we just look to see that we're just listening to that voice for the first time, will become an integral part of our lives, our dreams, in addition to our venerable Jeff Buckley and Bertrand Cantat. Track # 5 has not yet started on the PC that spring to seek more information. "Patrick Watson, you say?" - "Yes Watson, who says?" - "Here is 'written' Patrick Watson, Canadian singer compared to Rufus Wainwright, Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, two CDs available assets import "-" Well it's all there is Jeff Buckley. How to import? Too bad he is not surprised arriving in Europe. " How I was wrong that night. A few months later, Patrick Watson and his team won the prestigious Canadian Polaris downgrading the most popular Arcade Fire and was released last September, also in Europe, "Close to Paradise", released in Canada a year earlier. Disk with a high intensity atmosphere taken by Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Yann Tiersen. A variety of instruments ranging from guitar, violin, accordion, piano, megaphone, samples, drums, banjo, balloons and forks several (!) and arrangements that flirt with Debussy and Satie, you know you should not disturb the sacred cows but: listen for yourself. Although the group is establishing itself slowly in Europe, which I can not see them in concert last year at the Union Chapel. An amazing concert, amazing. For this, I have not hesitated to get tickets to the concert 5Luglio at the Tabernacle in Notting Hill. A charming place as the Union Chapel. The Tabernacle is a former evangelical church in 1887, with the curved facade, built in red brick, not far from Portobello Road. A beautiful Romanesque style building, now used as a cultural center. A room with little or no say gremitissima least three hundred people. And oddly ' was an event little noticed. On stage, Patrick Watson and his amazing group of musicians: the Wooden Arms. The lights are dim and it seems to help almost a religious rite Masonic for a few initiates. Tonight, to accompany a female singer and also a string quartet. Patrick is a great talker, funny, jokes with the band, and 'always ready to entertain the crowd with amusing anecdotes throughout the concert of "Big Bird in a Cage Small", "Wooden Arms," \u200b\u200b"To Build A Home". And in what seems a moment, we are transported to the end of the first set. For the second set, the usual surprise. I format the concert stage and audience, it becomes in a musical road. Patrick put on the armor of his tree of five loudspeakers in the shoulder, and followed by his acoustic guitar and percussion musicians advances in the audience, as did the musicians in the streets in the past. The mini parade of musicians will stop in the middle of the room, creating a circle around them. The group is caught by surprise when the violins meet in the mezzanine, even hidden in the midst of their present. The audience smiles, and all seem to share the same spirit that you can 'create over a campfire. Patrick leaves his tree microphones, boards a couple of steps and sang "Man Under the Sea" with the refrain, followed by the entire audience, "Just me, the fish and the Sea ", first softly and then very strong. At the end of the concert, people seem very happy and smiling and all begin to talk to each other. Patrick slips out of the dressing room and stops to take pictures and joking with fans. Simon Angell, guitarist, brings advice to the patrons of the banquet goods and Robbie Kuster, the imaginative percussionist, relaxed ride with a couple of friends in the garden. I do not see Mishka Kein, bassist, will be 'the next time. Thus, 'while the sun sets over London I leave this nice brotherhood. While still spinning in my head "Just Our family gather round to round and scream to noise and leave the ground I was so happy there under, under the sea" a sense of joy and celebration invades my senses for a few precious hours.
